BROOKLYN BOUND
Brooklyn neighborhood, PORTLAND, OREGON
Brooklyn Bound is an expansive mural at Heckmann & Thiemann Motors, a family-owned and operated specialty repair shop, perched above the busy underpass of SE 19th & Powell Blvd.
The first historical landmark is the iconic Aladdin Theater sign. The names on the marquee credit the contributing writers and lead muralist. Brooklyn Park’s splash pad water slide is featured, a favorite summertime destination for many neighborhood kids and adults on hot summer days.
Next to the marquee, is the famous Poulsen House, a beloved local landmark that has overlooked the Willamette River since 1892; a major example of Queen Anne architecture in Portland. Poulsen was one of Portland’s lumber barons and was said to have hand-picked the highest quality mahogany, oak, and old-growth Douglas Fir used in its construction.
Tucked amid the neighborhood’s Trimet MAX tracks is a piece by TRUE 54. The tracks lead to a collage of symbols of Brooklyn, including a train, cargo bike, and a sneaker representing Phil Knight who attended nearby Cleveland High School. Following along the tracks is another piece, by legendary writer, KANGOE.
The next set of images honors Brooklyn’s long history of being a working-class neighborhood with many beloved local brewers and vintners. Amongst a pair of chrome taps, sits a bottle of wine. In a clever twist, the imagery on the label is the logo of Devin’s company, Define Arts. The final piece is a colorful cotton-candy like swirling piece, from local writer OTHER, next to tracks that softly curve into the Ross Island Bridge.
“This was a fun project encompassing several facets of the Brooklyn neighborhood. Focusing on historical landmarks, tradition, modalities, amenities and this unique location. We wanted to add elements of style writing and tie in the aesthetic of the spray painted imagery. Creating harmonious movement between the two concepts.” – Artist Devin Finley
